I have always prided myself on always being on the start line, ready to win. I no longer believe I can achieve this.

I am here to let you all know that I have decided to retire from my sport of athletics. It has been a long 16 years, but also a fun and exciting 16 years.

It has come to the point where I believe that my body won’t be able to cope with the demands of training and intensity of competition, for me to be at the level I know I should be to be in a position to bring home more world championships, and more Olympic gold medals for you all.

As you know all, I am a very competitive athlete… a perfectionist as well, and I just don’t believe that I will be able to deliver at the high demand that I demand of myself.

I would like to thank my family and friends, and I’d also like to thank my sponsors – Adidas, in particular, who have supported me from the very beginning, and who have been very supportive of my career.

I’d also like to thank the media, who have been very kind to me over my long career as well. It has been a pleasure working with most of you.

And lastly, I would like to thank all of you… the fans. You have been there from the very beginning also, supporting me through the highs and lows of elite sport. You all know how tough it has been for me over the last few years with on-going hamstring and Achilles injuries, and we all know they are not fun… so I would like to thank you for your support, and also for your on-going support as well through the next phase of my life and career.

It’s going to be an exciting next step for me, I feel really happy with this decision that I have made… I have two olympic medals, one of them being gold… two world championship gold medals, as well as a silver medal… two Commonwealth games medals, and also two indoor medals as well, one of which being gold… so I have been very lucky to have had a successful career… one that I can be most proud of, and leaving my sport happy… still loving the sport, still loving the training, and still loving competing.

But my body has decided it is time to let it go, and move forward onto a different direction.

So again, thank you for your continued support, and I will see you around.

Regards,

Sally Pearson
